"Capture"
9:51pm

"Capture" is the theme this week at Illustration Friday. The first thing I thought of was a bird's talon, with his prey:

This is an Indian tawny eagle capturing his prey. Eagles are raptors, which have strong grasping feet with sharp talons for catching and holding prey. Their hooked upper beak tears and kills prey, and their binocular vision allows them depth perception for hunting.

The raptor with his capture has become an important symbol to many cultures. We need look no further than the United States Great Seal to see an eagle capturing items with both his talons:

In one talon, he has an olive branch, while in the other, arrows, suggesting the capacity for both war and peace.

The country to the south of the U.S., Mexico, in its Coat of Arms, also features an eagle capturing an item:

The eagle clasps a snake, while perched on a cactus, important imagery to the Aztec founding of their capital.

The bird of prey symbology goes back to the Ancient Egyptians, as well. For them, it is the falcon that appears. The falcon is a symbol for Horus and later Ra-Harakhty (Horus is on the horizon), as the Sun God became associated with the Pharoah.

Here's two beautiful falcons found in 'King Tut's' tomb:

Here the falcon has captured the 'Shen' symbol, heiroglyph for 'infinity'.

The falcon in the more usual side facing view, but still holding the 'Shen' symbol, in addition to the 'Ankh' for life

"New Old Mandala"
1:01am

I was going through my artwork, sorting them into manilla folders so they would be less damaged than just shoving them into my big brown portfolio, when I spied an old mandala that begged for a re-scan. The first time I'd played with the color maps, and I did again this time. I also played with it so that it would have more regularity and symmetry:

"Ramses II Offering Ma'at"
12:43pm

©JAL, 8-6-06

This is done from a wall plaque image (reversed so he's facing outwards) from a temple wall painting at Abydos, Dyn. XIX, 1300 B.C. I added a few original details, but overall, it is as the original. The XXX stands for the Xepera Xeper Xeperu formula.

I hope to color this, and would try today. I can see it, Maat's dress royal blue, Ramses' eyes blue to match, suggesting he 'sees Maat'. His collar gold to suggest a sunburst linking him to of Ra-Hararkty, oh, I want so badly to start coloring it now. But I really should be preparing for our big plans this week. Perhaps if I get some necessary tasks done... So later...

(Later note):
I feel compelled to add my statement that making Ramses' eyes blue to suggest he 'sees Maat' in no way is to suggest I favor blue eyed people over those who are not. It is only a matter of color sameness that is the association. These days one can't be too careful. With a certain awfully anti-Semetic actor drunkenly spewing his hatred around, I just want to make sure of that.

Whew!

I did it! And it's still Sunday!

"Just to Say..."
7:04pm

I won't be posting for a while. I should soon have lots of pictures to make up for that absence. In the meantime, as I answered the challenge to 'explain my path in a few paragraphs', Julia also did, and I've placed her answers on our website, as well. You can see after my book recommendations, she also read the Benoist book.

Well, I'm prepared for the week ahead I think as well as I can. It gets to be stuttering time, this close to lift off. Sorry to be so mysterious, but if you've been reading for awhile, you know that's my way.

"Just to Say... I'm BACK!"
10:01pm

Okay, not much words tonight, but I have selected the best photos and put them up on the web. As it's rather late, I won't be making the journal entries around them, but if you are very curious, you can start with the first photo and work sequentially to the last photo. Well, actually, this photo of the Washington Monument as seen through the airport window was the last. But if you've looked at those photos, you might gather Julia and I spent a few days in Orlando, Florida. No, we didn't see Mickey Mouse, but did see his hand.

All went smoothly until the last plane, whose flight was cancelled until the morning. One frustrated traveller said, "You have to laugh or you'll cry." I cried, big time. But they did give a voucher for a hotel stay with free shuttle there and back. So it wasn't all bad.

And the cancelled flight happened at the END of the trip, and not the beginning. So we didn't miss out on any of the fun.

I'll get into much more detail tomorrow. Until then, keep on seeking the magic.

"Few Words Yet, But..."
5:27am

I have few new words about our trip, but I did place some of the favorite pictures into the Photo Gallery. I have Window thru Window, which was taken at the Colorado Springs resort, Tiger and Me, from the Animal Kingdom, (bits of Julia's hair and dress and another observer, too), a a captivating candle at the Maya Grill, and my favorite, a water droplet kissed flower with resort view in background. (For this one, I included full size detail also.)
