"Sinuses!"
6:50am

Yes, I have stuffed sinuses, I am trying to be 'make my peace' with it. (Hurts worse, otherwise.)

Maybe I will come up with a better picture for the Friday Illo theme of 'SPROUT'. But for now...

"A Drawing Because I Cannot Sleep"
12:29am

I try to sleep, but cough so. It is the dammed sinus drainage, it makes like I am choking on it, so I must sit up. I'll try a throat lozenge... and a spontaneous drawing...

I thought of a dumb title like 'when the chips are down' or 'when life gives you lemons'...

But thought better of it, and will let the picture speak for itself.

"Coming Into Memory"
9:46am

I began this entry at 9:46am and ended it at 11:42am as I added to it through out the morning.

Grecian triad, Egyptian sphinx and pillars of candlesticks

Laura and Julia got the trio from a furniture store (in Phoenix?) for half price. Julia can't recall exactly, but I found the old journal entry which perserves the info. Julia mostly remembered it right, but forgot that it was at Penneys. More recently, she bought the sphinx for me as a surprise gift here in Yuma. The pillars have an old history. Way back when I was in college (and dinosaurs roamed the earth - oh 1978 or 1979 to be more exact!) I bought those for my Mother. When she died, and I went home for the funeral, I took them back, along with many other items that had been hers.

I might not be remembering the pillar history right. It might have been in 1985 or 1986, when I had just moved out on my own, and was attending a gay church in Hinsdale. The church which rented to us had a sale of various items. Yes, I think it was then. Memory, it's such a changeable thing. If I don't write it down, I can't really be sure.

Anyway, here it is as I best remember it. The hosting church was having this sale, and our MCC group had advance notice of it. I think the intentions were for the items to be in an auction. But we were told, "Just pay what you think the items are worth." I paid a really cheap price, something like five dollars, no doubt much less than the contributor had hoped the pieces would garner for the benefit. But to elevate the 'karma' points, I gave the candlesticks to my mother. I figured the act of giving would outweigh the act of near theft. By now, the karma's almost squeaky clean? Anyway, I hope my mother enjoyed them while she had them. She had given them a prominent place in her home.

I found a picture she'd sent me and here is a detail:

On the back she'd written, "See the Brass Candlestick holders on the Piano which you gave me when you lived on Broadway". Well, there is written proof, 1985 or 1986 was it!

"In-VEST-ments"
11:43pm

Ooh, what industry! Having learned that sadly another of Yuma's fabric stores has been edged out by the big mall new comer, Julia and I went there this morning to take advantage of the close out sales. Well, knowledge that the store is closing does inspire more buying. To further that inclination, huge signs told us, "Buy now, for it may not be here tomorrow." And buy, we did. Eight different types of fabrics came home with us in a huge bag. Eager to further the metamorphosis into garments, I got energetic and cut out several items tonight.

I suppose it's the Chinese equivalent of Egyptomania, the taking of symbols and glyphs without understanding of the meanings, just for decorative purposes. Julia saw this brown fabric with Chinese characters in blue and fell in love with it:

So I cut that one out first using a pattern with which I've done two of her other dresses. I asked Julia the right way to position the characters. "See how this character makes like the roof of a house?" She even named some of their meanings, "Star, child, the way, the moon..." I got enough of it so that I could have a vest, as well.

Then having figured out how to do the facings for the vest, I felt energized to cut out four more vests. All of the fabric that I bought with the intention of making myself a vest has been cut out. I still need to buy purple lining for one, and red lining for another. But the outside bodies have been cut out. That's a simple blue denim vest and a tan vest which I'll make sporty with flat fell seams and facings sewn down, a beautiful red brocade with more 'Chinese-omania', and a purple tapestry which I bought in the home decorating department. I got enough of that, Julia will have a vest of it too. It is very heavy and should be warm.

Now all I have to do is put all of that together! Not tonight, though!
