"Messed Up Moussa?"
9:48pm
Following a story linked to the Egyptology blog, I learned of an exhibition, “Anubis, Upwawet and Other Deities” at the Cairo Museum. "About 100 of the 400 stelae are made of terracotta, or baked clay, a material not used for stelae at other Egyptian sites. Many are relatively crude and most are covered with pictures of jackals and other dog-like animals." says the article originating from Reuters. So I think 'dog-like animals', some of the early drawings of the Set animal have a sort of canine appearance, maybe there's SET SIGHTINGS to be had. I went on a search to find other photos from the exhibit. I only found one other, and no Set sightings.
Somehow, following links off of one Google result, however, I ended up at a page with the photo of an almost ugly man. I thought to myself, "That's a face I have to draw." One thing about drawing people you don't know, is they're not likely to be offended by said image. Unless, of course, they or their beloved does a search and finds the image.
But ya have to take your chances.
I wanted to learn more about this guy with the deep set arresting eyes, and learned "he has become known for his quick temper." However, that doesn't mean he doesn't have his backers. "Time magazine described the 65-year-old as 'perhaps the most adored public servant in the Arab world'," and that "Egyptians like him so much they literally sing his praises."

I don't think I captured his likeness very well. Oh well, maybe better luck next time. (But, yes, the whites of his eyes show underneath his eye, like his eyes are rolling up into his head. And yes, the man in my picture does look like a man of quick temper and strong opinions.)
Note of March 6, 2007:
I attempted some of the digital changes on the original, to make it look more like the altered version. I decided I like it better. Thus you see Tuesday's result here. The digital tweaks are now much less, only the grayed background, and a slight whitening of the area underneath his 'rolled' eyes.

"When the Night Was Crowded"
9:48pm

A trash can for "REJECTED THEORIES", behind which Set is whispering "PSST!" and offering something,
a four eyed, (bug eyed) computer user, maybe overwhelmed, and a bird like figure in the background (Horus???)...
SAY WHAT YE WILL...
SAY...
Yes, it looks like a 'crowded night'.
And a 'crowded night' it's been. My books arrived, but I could not concentrate past the Preface of the Dionysos book. I felt something, an urge to draw, call it 'creative madness'? (Kerényi quotes an earlier scholar of Dionysos, who ascribed to him the 'creative madness'. Erm, just make sure it's not 'pathological' madness, as Kerényi warns.) Yuppers....

"Way Out School"
9:51pm

For some reason, the plant reminds me of the fallopian tubes and the birth canal...
Maybe that's what the picture means, life on earth as a school?

"Life Seeking a Form"
12:32am
I think this has been influenced by my brief readings in Kerényi's book, the difference between zoë and bios, the bios being CHARACTERIZED LIFE, and zoë "is life considered without any further characterization and experienced without limitations." (Introduction)
Then he goes on to discuss Minoan Art, which I investigated further on the web, and that may have also featured in, with its movement and swirly lines and "secret life of nature".
I did not get past page eight before I felt the itch to grab a pen...

"Lure of the Dark Side"

"Photo Friday Theme: Addiction"

My favorite 'addiction': Dark Chocolate!
This one is 'bittersweet dark chocolate with hazelnuts and currents'
Most people are showing coffee drinkers. I've never developed that habit, but, ooh, I have to admit dark chocolate has a certain draw. It must be DARK, no wimpy stuff for me!

"With What Shall We Fill our Minds?"
12:08pm

This is line drawing original, color version will be up soon...
4:40pm

Consciousness, the central point of all...
Note of March 11, 2007
Right after I did this, I thought it was brilliant, utterly brilliant. Maybe with the sobriety of a new day, this picture has odd unforeseen connotations? The metaphor of 'mind as vessel' and 'consciousness as grail' might work, but to drink out of a cup like that might be really weird, like you've sawed off someone's head and are drinking their brains? So is this metaphor just ruined because of other associations?
But if I don't think about that, I still like the picture.
