"Some were aware"
6:34pm

Business end of my work machine...

I recently got a new moleskine sketch book. From what I gather, artists really regard these differently than any other sketchbook. The black covered books have a history, told in a enclosed pamphlet using six different languages. It's a nice size, small enough not to be cumbersome, large enough not to be difficult to capture anything significant.

I didn't use that book for the sketch above. I have a tiny sketchbook in my lunch case, and spent five minutes or so at the beginning of the work day drawing the business end of my sewing machine. My co worker was on her cell phone when I entered. She was still on the phone for quite a while afterwards. I don't think she noticed me sketching.

Later this evening, I followed a link to a story on the hazards of cell phones. They are suspected of all sorts of things, including bee population losses. In addition to this, and the cancer fears which we've heard, I just read the following:

"Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives."

Today's society has become so utterly dependent on these phones. Many people spend half their waking lives on them. Now, I've never seen the draw, because I am not a person who likes to talk on the phone. I prefer written communication or face to face. Meanwhile, I wonder about the conclusions these researchers are making, and how much validity they have.

I hope we are not having a cellular version of the ancient Romans' fondness for leaded drinking cups, make up and wine. They even used lead as a sweetener!). Back then, some were aware of lead's toxicity, but few paid any attention.

"Beginnings"
6:29am

ART WANTS OUT...

I have initiated the moleskine and decorated the inner cover. As I did this, I heard the lady cat howling wildly outside on our porch. It is the season for this. A couple of years ago she also did so, just around Walspurgisnacht, and I photographed the results of her lust the following August.

Pondering this, I googled for 'eros, creation' and found this interesting quote:

"For the Greeks, the essence of Eros is the unfoldment of human thought, and in Greek philosophy, he is described as a liberating agent who releases and activates the creative process of the mind. Eros inspires and opens the channel of intuition to the higher and abstract understanding and communion with beauty and truth."

Wikipedia explains:

"In Greek mythology, Eros (Greek: Ερως) was the primordial god of lust, love, and sex; he was also worshipped as a fertility deity. His name is the root of words such as erotic. He was the son of the deity Aphrodite. Like Dionysus, he was sometimes referred to as Eleutherios, "the liberator"."

Meanwhile, as Julia mused, "Radio KCAT is broadcasting loudly!" I'm sure there will be receptive ears!

"Squirrel"
9:28pm

Eastern Grey Squirrel

Last night we watched one of the episodes of 'Life of Mammals', the one about 'chiselers', those mammals with tough teeth. A squirrel's got to have tough teeth to get at the tasty bits of those nuts.

I looked all over the web, and cannot find the origins of calling someone 'squirrelly' who is odd and unpredictable. One dictionary gave as definition, just plain 'nutty'.

However that word came about, squirrels themselves are cute, with their nimble little paw-hands.

(I added this squirrel to my critter gallery.)

"Ma'at"
11:34pm

Ma'at, Egyptian Goddess of Justice, Balance and Truth

I started with an image I'd saved off the web, flipped it horizontally and magnified it so I could draw from it better. After that, spontaneous inspiration took over, and she took on a life of her own. (I have the heiroglyphs for Ma'at, life and power there as meaningful deco. [I did the unusual two legged ankh])

I then did one with her facing the other way...

I will put these in the print gallery, as well. But now it's 12:22am, so that will wait for another day...

"Rocking the Art World"
8:56am

Paul Stanley
"ROCKING THE ART WORLD"

I love the Bob and Sheri morning radio program. Yesterday, Sheri was all excited to be interviewing Paul Stanley of KISS fame. He's exhibiting some of his artwork in their broadcasting city, Charlotte North Carolina. I have to admit I was thinking, "Sure they clamor for his artwork because he's famous, but if he weren't famous..." And there's no doubt the fame helped. But I had a look see for my own self. Right away, the image of a very handsome man greeted me. No wonder Sheri raved about his 'raven locks'! Oh, yes, this man has that 'vampyric glamour' in spades! And his expressionist style art work is good, also. (I think maybe I'll check out his music, as well.)

I'm impressed by what he said in an interview found at his website:

"I feel great about the album," he says.

"I did it for me and I'm really happy with it. Live to Win is about setting your goals, pursuing them without regard for what other people think. It's easy for people to tell us it's impossible but you go after what you want on your own terms. It's more difficult not to follow the path of others.

"There is nothing worse than trying to second guess what other people want you to do. I find that going my own path and making my own way is easier than going along someone else's. It's also more exciting. I'm a big believer in contributing to my own success. The harder you work, the luckier you get."

May I do likewise!

I'm not sure the Egyptians had much to do with this amusing 'Egyptian' horoscope thingy, however they did study the stars and had star maps. (Julia, who researches astrological matters extensively, tells me there is much debate over this, with most scholars saying that the Egyptians got into astrology only in their later centuries under Greek Ptolemic rule, borrowing it from the Chaldeans.) But what I find amusing is the birth dates. I was born November 10th, however Laura would also fall under 'Thoth', having been born on April 14th. And if one uses the more conventional sidereal astrology ('sidereal'= by the stars), Julia and I both have sun and moon under 'Libra'.

And, further amusing is that under this 'Egyptian' version, Julia is compatible to me, being born under 'Isis':

Isis

Honorable, straightforward and idealistic. Active and self-confident.

"Sunset Walk"
7:55pm

The evening air was cool, and I didn't want to spend another minute with my backside glued to the computer chair. So Julia and I went to Smucker's park to enjoy the fresh air and stretch our legs.

The sinking sun made long shadows:

Julia's in the seat...

I love the way the sun rests on the tree and play arena...
(see our shadows in the lower left corner...)

The sun was setting just before we left...
