"Ever Changing"
7:49pm

My Thoth prints arrived today. I was dismayed that the forms looked much more confusing than they do on the screen:

Thoth as
he was...

It's just a jumble. Certainly, much of its faults are due to the initial drawing being only 2.5 by 3.5 inches. Still, I couldn't leave it like that. Looking at the print, I could see more readily what needed fixing. So I refined him still further:

Thoth as he now is...

I will get him ready for exchanging files at the print gallery, as well...

Note of Tuesday, May 8, 2007, 6:06am

I've got the improved versions up in the print gallery, as well as the 5x7 option, which I hadn't yet offered.

"Anubis at Sunset"
9:54pm

If Anubis there looks a bit more skilled than my last attempt at Thoth, it's partly because the initial sketch was a good deal larger than 2.5x3.5 inches, almost 12 inches in height.

(You might recognize the statue from which I drew.)

"Angry Sketches"
6:47pm

broke 100°F today!

I don't know if it was the influence of a newspaper horoscope I read or not, that influenced me to attempt 'angry' sketches. It said to take a red pencil and get busy on a sketch pad to express anger, (presumeably to get it all out safely on paper and not in wall smashing, face smashing ways). The germ of the thought stayed with me, and I thought it would be good artistic practice to draw people with strong emotional expressions. So I brought up the Adobe photo stock and searched for 'anger/angry'. One model particularily impressed me with his angry looks, so I drew three different poses of his:

I like the way he looks at you directly, (although I think the expression looks more like suspicion or distrust)

He looks directly at you in the photo, but not so much in this ten minute sketch (Not so successful!)
The neck-head alignment is off, the arm is off, the foreshortening of the pointing hand is OFF, it's OFF-FUL!
(And it looks more like he's saying "YOU should buy my weight loss/get rich, etc. plan...")

I think the expression is more one of HORROR, than anger...

I like the last picture I did the best. You can see in the lower left hand corner where I timed myself, 6:01-6:21, twenty minutes. Maybe I was more inspired to spend longer because I liked the direction it was going.

"Thank You Very Munch"
6:46am

This morning I added the sunset pic to the Photo Friday collection of 'Amber' pictures. (I'm number 138...)

Last night I added "The Horror!" to the figurative gallery. Julia quipped, "Thank you very Munch!" I laughed til tears flowed. Guess you gotta have some art history background to get that...

"New Thoth Line Drawing"
7:40pm

I figured, why follow the statue exactly? So I gave him something useful to do with the hand that had been resting on his knee! Also, I learned something about the heiroglyph 'neb' which means 'lord of'. The bowl shaped heiroglyph also means 'bowl', so perhaps when Thoth is called 'Lord of Ma'at', they are meaning he CONTAINS Ma'at?

So the bowl which I have imagined holds ink for writers and artists, and healing ointment for those who are sick has another meaning.

I hope to transform him into a color image, using the same golden brown, turquoise, white and gold color scheme I have in my earlier attempt. (But because I am taking the day easy, I will do that another day...)

"Thoth Under the Midnight Sky"
9:53am

I tried to make the deco on his collar, arm bands and bowl band meaningful, as well as including the heiroglyph for Thoth (Djehuty) in the lower left. Also, I looked at ibis pictures. The orangish golden beak does exist with the white feathers. Although this is not the coloring of the traditional 'sacred ibis', with its black beak, it is still ibis colors. It made sense then to have the hair white. Also, white hair is often associated with the wisdom that comes with age, and so it makes sense to me that Thoth have white hair. Yes, it's probably not 'Kemetic' standard, but to me it makes sense. As I am trying to impart a sense of 'realism' to the image, and how an ibis head would fit on a human body, golden brown flesh more aesthetically appealing here, this matches better.

(And YES! I yanked the crappy ones at the print gallery and put the new ones in!) He's available in a print, either 4x5, 5x7, 8x10 or 11x14 version! See 'Egyptian Inspired' gallery
