"Lovely Set Sightings!"
6:28am

"HORUS AND SET RECONCILED" Brussels Museum of Art and History via
GEM
Engraved faience, Not before NEW KINGDOM, not after 19TH DYNASTY?

From the GEM site:
"The blue enamel seal takes the form of a cartouche representing Seth and Horus holding hands. The two gods with the heads of falcons are wearing the double crown of Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. They are surmounting the hieroglyphic sign signifying gold. The handle of the seal is the transposition, in faience, of vegetable stalks tied together. The material indicates that it is probably an amulet..."

the back side of this amulet...

You can see where the necklace chain or rope would go through. I differ from the museum description, for I think the figure on the left looks to be more falcon headed and the figure on the right to have more of the Set animal snout.

And I found another ivory knife, similar to the one at the Cairo museum:

reverse of that knife...

As it says in GEM website, the entities depicted "would magically turn their aggressive instincts against those who would do evil to the mother and child. Both sides of this piece of ivory are decorated in a similar fashion..." Among the various entities are "a serpent, a crocodile, a brazier, the god Aha-the fighter-, a hippopotamus, a Seth animal, another hippo, a knife, the frog-goddess Heqet and a winged griffin."

And of course, the Global Egyptian Museum website also has a page on my favorite statue, Horus and Set with Ramesses the Third:

"At the Point of Creation - Raw Sketch"
7:02pm

Today's picture has an unusual source of inspiration. I was grooving over Llee Heflin's fractilated Thoth tarot cards. He shows the original, not created by him, and then his variations on them. They are spell binding in their complexity. Meanwhile, I saw one of the original cards, the 'Art' card, and I decided to have at it for artistic inspiration, as well.

Smaller version of the original Aleister Crowley/Lady Frieda Harris version.

I did this part by observation and part by intuitive method. Thusly, it came out considerbly different, the eagle and the lion turing into a sort of masculine Set creature and a feminine winged snake:

Yes, it is clearly begging for color, I see the window behind 'the cook' as being stained. But I think I'll take the rest of tonight to just rest. I'm still getting over that beastly sinus/ear infection.

"At the Point of Creation - Line Drawing"
10:11pm

When I began to prepare this picture for coloration, I realized there was much wrong with the initial sketch. The more I looked at it, the more I saw that needed fixing. Now it's in a state I can work with for color:

"A Dream of Liberty"
5:38am

Even though I went to bed quite late, I woke with a dream so vivid, it has left me in tears.

I dreamt I was a doorman in a nice hotel. My tasks were simple, but I carried them out with pride. I grew to love the clientale who would return again and again.

But something changed in the proud city in which I lived. New laws were being enacted to 'protect the national security'. The newspapers informed us each day what they were and how our lives would change. People grumbled but went along with things. Finally it came to a proclamation so insulting, everyone bristled under it. All were issued 'locator belts', which they had to wear to tell the authorities where they were at all places and times.

On my last day of work, the hotel patrons were all leaving. Long limos and short cabs came to take them all away, where they went to go back to their own countries, in which people didn't have to wear locator belts. The mood was somber and heavy. I finished my last shift, said goodbye to the last patron and my co workers, and took off on foot walking. It was my decision to quit.

I kept on walking and walking in the night. How it was that I was able to pass unseen, not wearing the required belt, I don't know. But I did, in the rainy night. I had in my mind the resolution that I would walk until I found a free city, in which people didn't have to wear locator belts, in which the government did not clock each person's every move.

I walked and walked and walked. I came to an elegant castle like building. In its yard, a child played in the rain with a kitten. Flowers grew, blessed by the rain. The child smiled at me.

Hope burst within me at the child's smile. I knew then that new life brings hope, that things would change.

That was my dream, and I burst into tears when recounting it to Julia.

There were many factors no doubt which brought about this dream. Unsettling news items, things on the History Channel, and discussions in various online groups no doubt were among the larger features. But also, those imports may have been augmented by my fresh anger over a coin motto.

Julia recently acquired a number of the new golden dollar coins, these with John Adams on the front side. I examined the new dollar coins earlier last night. We noted all the inscriptions, including the date, were on the outside rim.

Julia thought they might wear away with usage. "It would be good if one of the inscriptions would be worn away," I opined to her. That supremely annoying "In God We Trust" motto! Who's God? Surely they are meaning the monotheistic Christian God. Certainly, it is a monotheistic deity in any case. It is blurring the separation of religion and state.

"A circulated $1 bill with "In God We Trust" marked out with a custom-made stamp"
The stamp says:
"Federal Encouragement of a Deity or Religion Violates The United States Constitution"

Wikipedia gives a fair summation of its use and objections to its use. "The motto In God We Trust was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the American Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout Christians throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize God on United States coins."

And who are they to put their religion on the PUBLIC's coins? We are a nation whose citizens recognize many gods, and some no gods at all. Certainly, the national motto, E Pluribus Unum meaning "out of many, (is) one" should suffice. Out of many, who each have their own opinion on such matters, we have come together to make one nation. There is no higher allegiance we should be under than our own individual conscience in these matters.

"Remembering D.C."
8:29pm

Certainly our recent trip to Washington, D.C. figured in this morning's technicolor vivid dream. The 'nice hotel' resembled very much the hotel in which we stayed. And I think 'the castle' I saw resembled the Smithsonian castle just a wee bit. I do hope that our nation will not sacrifice liberty for a false sense of security.

But I treasure the vibrant history our nation has had in the past.
