"Young 'Beast', Old 'Beast'"
1:52pm

I thought I'd give a try or two to the sketching of Aleister Crowley, aka 'the Beast'. Such a conflicted, contradictory fellow! Capable of brilliant insights combined with utterly clueless disasters, his visage was indeed fascinating to study for a brief while. I chose the younger Crowley first:

thirteen minutes spent on this piece, and yes, the shadowing looks like a snarl ball of yarn...

Face detail...

There he is, when his life was before him, all of potential. I found interesting the contrast of him as an older man:

ten minutes spent on this piece...

He does indeed look "perplexed by a mystery he could not identify"(BoCfbN). Maybe it was that 'getting lost in Nuit thing'. One loses all capacity for critical judgment when one does that. And too much absinthe and peyote and heroin and so forth doesn't help, either.

Anyway, he's a intriguing man, well worthy for the artist's pen.

In addition to other websources on him, Xeper.org features a commentary on his book. Look for the pdf on 'Temple of Set' and search....

"Thoth Ibis"
9:40pm

Just a quick coloring of a Dover Egyptian stencil piece...

And a Few Thoughts....

I came across this interesting quote:

"That which is pleasing to the eye gives joy, and joy gives strength, and strength gives life."
-Anton LaVey, the Devil's Notebook, p.72

LaVey yanked that from the Egyptians, so I'm yanking it back. 'That which is pleasing to the eye' is of beauty. Beauty gives joy, whereby our KAs are fed and we are thereby strengthened.

Everywhere, the taking time and space for the beautiful opens the door for this. The creation of sacred space opens the channel, too. Beauty in all its forms, YES!

"Venus Wants Her Bath"
10:14pm

I emerged from my long soaky bath much refreshed after the arduous tasks of the day. Afterwards, I found odd inspiration when I looked at Julia's Venus D'Arles statue. That hand holding the apple looked like she was knocking, knocking, knocking on a locked door....

"Ain't you done with yer bath YET???"

I apologize if I've now ruined this image for you.

"Androgyny"
9:02pm

I was out web wandering when I came across this Shiva and Shakti blend, found in someone's journal entry about male/female principles. I couldn't resist having a try at the image. Right now the line drawing is so basic, and this piece would so much be improved by coloring. But there it is in the preliminary state.

Thoughts in the morning, Thursday, November 1, 2007
I think, too, of the Egyptian pharoahs, within whom the two powers are reconciled, isn't this too another form of reconciliation within the self? I think also of Jung's two flames of love and power. All these dualities to be reconciled and balanced within the Self, all embraced, the awakened will seek this.

(And I wonder, too, were Set and Isis ever considered a pair, like Shiva and Shakti? In Kemetic spelling, Set and Aset? Perhaps these were mysteries kept hidden? And perhaps I too much speculate, no scholary authority to back me up? But there is Shiva and Shakti, and the Dark Lord speaks as he will, and so do I. (Grin!))

"Strange Dream"
2:10am

I wake from a dream. I am at work in this dream. I think I should get paid for such dreams. It is where I work, and it is not where I work. A customer comes in. He is a fairly slender dark haired man in his thirties. His hair is a little long. He wants to speak to me, he wants me to write down each job, so I hunt for a piece of paper. I tell him the counter girls will then transfer it to the computer. He does not want to deal with the computer. He has a huge mound of clothes, and pulls one item out, to tell me its flaws. Then he gets distracted. He leaves the mound on my cutting table. His wife came in, who needs something. I tell him I am busy, I will go back to sewing, he can come back when he is done.

Here's where it gets even odder. There is a high backed wicker chair at the front of the shop. His wife who has long blonde hair is sitting in it like it's a throne, and he is stroking her shoulders. Then the appearance and location of the building changes, we are now on a busy street in a northern city near Canada.

(I think the northern part came in because I woke up cold, without covers.)

Meanwhile, the shop is now in a huge northern city. His wife is not the only thing distracting the man. It turns out he was also waiting for a nearby restaurant order to be done. The waiter comes to him with a dark green square plate that has a huge mound of thickly cut French fries on it. Those fries look so good, I want some, but he is there at the store's front, eating them.

(I presume his wife also got something to eat.)

It is strange behavior, indeed. My co-workers said, "Oh, it is because he is Canadian", mispronouncing the word 'Canadian' to have a weird French accent.I want to defend the Canadians, and struggle to think of something to say, but wake up then.

(Cold, blanketless, needing to pee, and taking a while to fully wake up...)

What's it all mean?

Certainly, I was thinking of prejudice that blames a person's eccentricities on their native land, or their race. I hate when people do that, particularily newcomers that come to your area, ignorant of its history, and start spewing their prejudice. Being of slow mind, I'm at a loss for what to say. If I could gather my words in such a way that they would be clear, understandable and well received, I would tell them to study the city's history and learn more. Also, don't blame a person's quirks on their race or nationality. They own that, their native land doesn't own that.

And for some reason, I am craving French fries. It's not for me, the rigors of the low carb diet. I can do well in all other respects. But I cannot go without my bread, my rice, my potatoes... (I cannot even resist pie and cookies and...) I hereby understand that I shall never be slim because of it.

Oh well, I do the best that I can stand. Let the chips fall where they may...

(I'll probably be rushing to catch them, if they are of potato...)

"Something Fishy"
4:25am

I have now awakened so well after my dream that sleep seems impossible. So I am revisiting DC through my photo archives:

Julia and I caught in the reflections of a DC window

That sign translated!

We didn't eat there, even though it would have been 'legal'.

This was on the day we went to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and we chose the eatery within that museum.

I am amused to think of this subject for the 'strength' topic of PHOTO FRIDAY. Fish can have a very STRONG odor. I remember with not much amusement of how I once brought kipper snacks to work. When heated, their strong odor permeated the work place. The manager, she could not handle it, my other co-workers, they could not handle it. The manager came rushing through out the place, armed with a spray can of some perfumant, not waiting until I finished eating. Bah!

If you can't stand the stink, get out of the kitchen!

"Absorbing Every Flavor"
9:46pm

Just there,
sitting at the table
in the artful café we watch
Chagall's cat look out on Paris
and sing along with the folk singer.
Meanwhile the man with two faces hides his secret passions
and shows to the world he is sober,
money saving and conservative.
But the cat knows
and doesn't care.
And someday the man will wear
purple and eat a peach and defend his love,
and all his colors will not keep
to shy borders.
We sit there, eat tuna sandwich,
drink moscato,
and absorb every flavor.

He sings along with the cat, or does the cat sing along with him?

"Illuminations"
6:39pm

After waking from a nap, I stumbled out into the living room to see the sun illuminating our glass globe:

Catching that with the camera, I was curious to see how our round rimmed Shiva would look against that background:

And then I got to playing around a bit:

And then I got to playing around some more:

Above is version for 8x10, the one higher is for 5x7...

Yes, I'll get them in the photo prints...
