"(Security) Blanket"
9:56am

"Security is Found Within"
©JAL, 2008

The Friday Illo theme this week is Blanket. I've waxed philosophical for this one, taking the idea of a 'security blanket', and what allows us to rest well at night.
self love
resilience
clean conscience
pride in the day's accomplishments
confidence
With these, we rest well at night.

Self love is the basic foundation from which all else proceeds.

The dictionary defines 'resilience' as:

1 : the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress
2 : an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change
If we can recover from stress, we can rest easily.

Without the clean conscience that comes from knowing we've acted to a consciously chosen set of ethics, sleep might well be disturbed.

With pride in the day's accomplishments, we know we've done the best we can for that day, and that brings a secure satisfaction.

The dictionary gives "a feeling or consciousness of one's powers" as the primary definition for 'confidence. With this, we can rely on our ability to respond well in any situation, and thus we can go to sleep without troubling worry.

"Ren Fest"
6:25pm

We left around noon for the Two Rivers Renaissance Festival. When we left, it was still cold, but I had an idea I should leave my thick vest in the car. It was a good idea, for the afternoon warmed up rapidly. A park-n-ride cart took us up to the festival. It's a lot bigger than last years, by double, I heard one vendor say. Everyone was so gracious and courteous as we examined their wares.

We saw this tea and spice stand at the beginning, and planned to return before we left. We made two rounds of the grounds before we found it again!

But we did, and bought some 'tropicana' tea, which I'm drinking now, aided by some honey to bring out the flavor.

We also sampled some of the food at the fair, the sweet potato fries were absolutely delicious, and did a good job of reviving me.

We saw mirrors, and could not resist:

Yes, I'm sporting something new on my chest:

It's a smaller version of the one that's hanging on our wall

There were lots of musicians, quite a few which I photographed. There was a hammered dulcimer player, possibly the one from last year, but now he's got CDs and a brochure and I'll share that photo later. For now, here's the Chuckwalla Rhythm Kings:

This local group sings and plays with gusto. We got their CD, which features many Celtic favorites such as "The King of Ballyhooley" and "Both Sides the Tweed". In case you're curious about the deco to our left of the stage, it is Pan!

The next is a drawing of two musicians seated on a bench in front of a huge sign that said "The American Renaissance Guilds and Empire"

I hope to share more pictures and drawings of musicians later, but I'll end with this neat reflective 'lake' view, with tents beyond:

"Eye Infection Again"
10:37pm

I finished my entry, and I sat down with Julia to get back into those Greek mythology lessons we'd forgotten about. We saw two lessons, one about the minotaur and the labyrinth and one about strange luck Heracles. It was about 9:00pm, and I found my eye hurting pretty bad. I thought going to bed early might help it. However, I am having great trouble sleeping.

As I typed the date and time, I found it hard to believe it's still Saturday. My right eye has been gradually reddening and getting more irritated since Wednesday or so. I thought the eye drops would get rid of it as they did before. But I don't know. I'm having great eye pain, like I never had before. I might need to go to urgent care. And at this point, it's a question of 'go now' or 'wait until morning'. I had no idea an eye could hurt this bad. Or is it the lining of the eye socket? I can't tell from where it's coming.

Oh well, I'll make report as I know more.

"Eye Infection Again"
11:52pm

I don't know what to do. How much would going to urgent care cost over waiting until Monday to see an eye doctor? Maybe I am just being a weakling. Maybe it's not hurting as bad. Maybe it's just really, really, really itchy now. Maybe it will go away on its own.

I am checking Wiki:
"Irritant or toxic conjunctivitis is irritable or painful when the infected eye is pointed far down or far up. Discharge and itch are usually absent. This is the only group in which severe pain may occur."

Ooh, yeah, that's when it hurts, the looking way up or way down. But I also have itch. And sometimes I have discharge.

from a source Wiki links to
"At its onset, conjunctivitis is usually painless and does not adversely affect vision. The infection will clear in most cases without requiring medical care. But for some forms of conjunctivitis, treatment will be needed. If treatment is delayed, the infection may worsen and cause corneal inflammation and a loss of vision."

Erm. Curiously, one site I saw said menopausal women often get dry eyes, which I often have, and which is probably why I've been having more eye irritation overall. I wonder if a bottle of eye drops I have got contaminated from the last infection. I'd accidently touched my eye with the dropper tip.

"Can't Sleep, But Not Hurting So Bad"
3:01am

I test my eyes, I bend my head low and look up, not quite so bad pain. I just keep anointing them with the saline drops. I'll get more tomorrow and toss that bottle that might be contaminated.

And I have this to say:

OW!
I will try again for sleep...

"Eye Report - 10 am"
10:16am

I woke, all goopy eyed, furiously itchy, but not much eye pain. It's there if I lower my head and then look up at the screen, but not as bad as yesterday night. I had Julia take this picture. The only things I did to it were cropping, doing 'curves' to lighten my skin tones, and taking some of the yellow out. That's a result of the bathroom lightbulb.

So I suggested we go outside on the porch:

In natural light... (zoom underneath, showing odd speckly debris, did something get in my eye?)

Julia urged me to go into the sunlight, but it hurt my eye, so I looked away...

"Julia, Our 'Local History Buff'"
12:33pm

I sketched Julia as she talked to Horst...

Our friend Horst called with the news that Julia is being quoted on the front page news

Yes, she did talk to our favorite Yuma Sun reporter last Friday, but we had no idea it would be front page news in the Sunday paper. Darin asked her about Roman numerals, which she was happy to explain. Apparently, a lot of people don't know. We'll go buy the paper news, but I have this screen capture for now:

"Eye Report"
6:18am

I was so busy with my picture yesterday, I did not visit the usual email and forums. I also didn't give an eye report. The right eye is steadily improving. I did see the eye doctor yesterday, fifty four dollars, but worth it to get knowledge. I have "a classic case of viral conjunctivitis" Viral, meaning it just has to work its course, which takes ten days. (A bacterial infection would have resulted in a greenish discharge, not the slightly thick teary discharge which even shows in Sunday's photos.) I've been doing the right thing all along, anointing it and the other somewhat itchy eye with 'pure tears' eye drops.

However, there is one kind of eye drop which is very bad, the kind that 'gets the red out'. That type has an antihistamine in it, and it removes the redness by shrinking the blood vessels. So it is an illusory appearance of improvement. Furthermore, that type of drop is ultimately drying and particularily not recommended if you also experience 'dry eye'. Age and climate tend to be encouraging that in me. I have to anoint them just not to feel 'sticky' and mildly itchy on a daily basis.

The doctor, who I like very much as he is very personable, also explained viral conjunctivitis is very contagious. I try so hard without a whole lot of success to keep my hands away from my face, but at least I am not rubbing my eyes any more.

"Evening Draw"
10:31pm

This is the original drawing. I attempted a digitally altered version with longer legs and no feet. I felt I should like that one better. I then put the two versions side by side on the computer and asked Julia's opinion. She likes with feet better. So maybe all that effort 'defeeting' him was a mistake. This odd character doesn't want to be defeated!

"Trying To Be Understood"
8:33pm

L'essai à être compris
(Trying to be understood)

I'm endeavoring to use external sources as prods to my creativity, to my intuition. In this way, not to copy, but to spark something in my own mind. First I take a random word to the Flicker search. I picked 'succulent' first, and was treated to a lovely array of fantastic flowers. Pleasing perusal, but I wanted people. Then I tried 'direct', thinking I might get someone with a direct gaze. Finally I found an intriguing pose I thought I could alter to suit.

Thus, I took the hand gestures and general pose of the young model, but then made them tell a different story. I also gave the man different hair and a shirt instead of a suitcoat. (I used the shirt I am wearing as model!) I added the notebook. (Perhaps he has written notes so he doesn't forget what he wants to say.) I gave him something to drink, and put the calender in as a whimsy, but also to suggest a 'foreign' listener who is confused.

"Nose to Nose"
6:08pm

I was on one of my favorite web spots in which a writer was talking about not just 'talking about writing', but actually going and doing it. I thought, "That reminds me...", and I left that page to go do my 'sketch of the day'. The first word that came to my mind was 'laser', so I put that into the Flicker search. It netted a wild variety of results. The picture that caught my eye snagged the search engine rader for a quote the photographer had included with his photo:

“Domestic dogs follow humans like a laser and watch the behavior of their humans with a focus that is astounding.” - Patricia McConnell, Zoology Professor.

This accompanied a cute photo of a boy with a watchful dog, which was fun to draw. The largest size photo held so much detail I felt as though I could reach out and touch the dog's ear, I could almost feel the silky short hairs covering the large flat flap. In my result, the boy and dog are much closer, more 'nose to nose' than 'face to face':

I could improve on how to suggest the nature of the dog's fur and the kid's hair with just a few quick strokes...
