This was inspired by the
Friday Illo theme of "GARDEN"

New Prints Available!

I just put this piece and some of the best photos from our Tucson trip at the Print shop. Perhaps the presence of one of these prints on your wall might have an unforeseen beneficial effect in your environment?

"A Gathering of Growing Things II"
10:33am

I placed yesterday's picture in my gallery of favorites, replacing "Energy Flux", which is not as favored. It's still in the Intuitive galleries, though. However, I replaced "Every Day Earth Day" with the new drawing, for although the concept was good, "Man warily observes the fragile balance of nature and cities in co-operation," the execution was rather awkward and no longer pleasing. I hope this means I am growing in ability.

Meanwhile, I return to those lovely gatherings at the Tucson Botanical Garden:

"Quick Sketch of Greek Singer"
8:26pm

Today was 'hair day', and I decided it was time to get my hair cut, as well. I'm probably the only person ever to determine when this is necessary because they are leaving hair balls on the carpet. So both Julia and I are nicely groomed.

Seeking an inspiration for a quick sketch, I took to Wikipedia to learn latest news. No! I have no desire to draw the New York governor who has resigned. None of the other news items for March 13th were drawing me. (Apparently, Wikipedia is on 'Univeral Time', which is seven hours later than Yuma time.) So I had a look at March 12 events, where I learned in 2005, Stavros Koujioumtzis, a Greek songwriter born in 1932 died. At Stavros' page, I read "Koujioumtzis has to show various co-operations with some of the most important Greek singers, Anna Vissi, Haris Alexiou, Yiannis Parios, Eleftheria Arvanitaki and Giorgos Kalatzis."

I know Anna Vissi, have downloaded one mp3 by her and would take more if more were sold in U.S. market. I've bought CDs by Haris Alexiou and Eleftheria Arvanitaki. I suspect I've heard Yiannis Parios on the HellinkosFM internet radio. For my quick sketch, I wanted a man. So I followed his link, where I found the link to his website. Parios has been very productive, from 1971 to 2006 he's made forty albums if I counted right. There's photos at his website.

I sort of melded together the 'direct gaze' one with the 'smiling' one:

"Pen and Ink Portrait of Old Man"
7:00pm

Yes, I used
an online source

But something extra went into it, as well. As I drew the old man, who is the photographer's grandfather, quite a bit of my Grandmother came through. She'd just get that look in her eyes as she talked about whatever.

I think I'm getting better with showing light and shadow areas using the micron pens. (This also shows form better.) I'll keep practicing on faces. As I ponder possible profit, I think my best chances would come from portraiture. I have a way of capturing 'life', they are not mere photograph copies. And as I improve on proportion and form, and also someday venture into oils, my efforts might well be something for which people would be willing to pay handsomely.
