"A Drawing to Quiet My Busy Mind"

Is it because the house is hot, and we really shouldn't have turned the AC off, or the absorbing but disturbing movie ("Before the Devil Knows You're Dead") we saw earlier, but I can't sleep. My mind is so restless. Anyway, I thought I'd try to siphon off some of the excess energy with a drawing: |

As I worked on digitizing the drawing, I noted one of the museum photos I had minimized in Photoshop. I took note of my reflection and the words in the background. I flipped the picture to read the words:
![]() "...was before me at last... ...so patient. There was... ...countenance a benignity... ...but it seemed sentient"
I was curious about that quote, and I had enough of it to do a web-search. It is Mark Twain in _Innocents Abroad_, speaking of the Sphinx at Giza:
"After years of waiting, it was before me at last. The great face was so
sad, so earnest, so longing, so patient. There was a dignity not of
earth in its mien, and in its countenance a benignity such as never any
thing human wore. It was stone, but it seemed sentient."

"Catching an Idea and Squeezing It"
What is happiness? I didn't,(I did get Julia looking, and she appreciated it), but everyone else seemed oblivious. Yet so often happiness is like this, in the small moments. If we don't look for it, we don't find it. I am certain happiness is different for awakened people. My initiatory experience of happiness grows when I learn how it is not dependent on external circumstances. It is not based on popularity or monetary wealth, or physical possessions, no matter how advertising tries to convince us otherwise. True wealth comes in knowing this. Those who are awakened rejoice in the deepening of consciousness by all means which strengthen it, such as learning and meditation. Also, I rejoice in good communication with other awakened people and that is another form of happiness.
And, after pondering this question, I felt the urge to draw: |

"Making Good Progress"

At 9:13pm, as I look at him, it looks like he's ready to toss that idea back, perhaps into a sort of basket?

I'm making good progress on my Brooklyn Museum gallery. I've got eleven rows finished, and now I'm going to take a break. We saw _Citizen Kane_ last night, and we also watched it with Ebert's running commentary. Excellent classic, I'd never seen it before. Now I'm going to get ready so we can see _Brideshead Revisited_. I'll be back later, and check emails and such then...
