"Two Faces"

The inspiration (Photographer gives 'creative commons', so here if not there)

The inspiration (Photographer gives 'creative commons', so here if not there)

I love 'travelling' through these photos. This photographer, over 70 years old, gets people to interact with her. I followed a group of four photos beginning here to see how this man warmed up to her as they had a little conversation.

"Nicola Rescigno"
7:31pm

The original b&w photo has a strong light source, leading to strong shadows which increases the drama of his presentation.
I tried to convey some of that using a linear approach.

Hopping from news item to news item, I landed at a photo gallery of "notable deaths". I saw many interesting faces, but the one of Nicola Rescigno particularily intrigued me. The brief info accompanying the photo said he was "the co-founder of the Dallas Opera". Wiki has more info on him. He also co-founded the Chicago Lyric Opera, in addition to being an "Italian-American conductor, particularly associated with the Italian opera repertory".

(If the amny.com photo is gone, Dallas Opera has a thumbnail also available here.

"Too Quickly..."
12:17am

If it were not now,
the whirring, blurring of truths,
of angry voices growing loud,
it would be another time.
Hazyness and indistinction happen with distance.
Too quickly the past is forgotten.
It would give lesson if studied,
but that takes time.
Haste propels, fervor swells,
lines are drawn with much too bold a pen.
Grooves deeply felt in some innocent quarter
cannot be easily mended.

"Same Old, Same Old"
6:50am

I sometimes feel weary and disappointed like this man:

"Same old, same old, I would so like to be surprised..."

Yes, the same old banal mediocrity continues. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer as living expenses increase, while wages stay the same. Environmental degradations, destruction of the rainforest continues. Too many animals, baring the brunt, go extinct. The war in Iraq goes on for years and years, and do they even want us there? All the death, and for what? But as I hear the drone of the news reporters on the "economic crisis", I hope the same old, same old won't get replaced by even worse.

I am amused my source photographer notes that the man in the photo is:
"il mio papá, riflettendo sul destino della sinistra italiana
my dad, reflecting on the destiny of italian left wing"

Oh, politics and politicians, another sad lament! A universal complaint! I hope the 'change' the future elected politicians bring will be actually beneficial.

"A Small Complaint"
6:46am

Eyedrops, old bottle 1 OZ, new bottle 0.3 OZ!

It's a small complaint, really, in the larger scheme of things. But it's sufficiently irritating for me. Not only are we being cheated on the amount of eye drops, the new pump bottle works poorly. It takes force to get it to lose a drop, and that force causes the delicate eye aiming to go off, meaning the tiny little drops go all over my face, but rarely in my eye. False advertising on that bottle, 'no mess, no waste'! I've heard all about it on the TV, how manufacturers are shrinking the size of the package, while still charging the same price. How &*(^%%##!! expensive can saline solution be?

I won't shed tears for it, (oh, not due entirely to my eyes being rather dry, heh), but I will be seeking out some other brand in the future.

(Note from the future, October 31, 2008:)
I was relieved to notice they still sell the old bottles, so I have options. The pump bottle quickly emptied, most of its contents on my cheeks, and I am now using the preferred 'easy aim' bottle.

"Packed"
1:04am

To be well-packed, take wherever you go:
Self-esteem, sense of humor, honesty, gratitude, imagination, curiousity,
empathy, keen awareness, forethought, resourcefulness and objectivity.
(Because no matter where you go, there you are!)

The Friday Illo theme this week is "Packed". I first began seeking inspiration by sifting through Flicker searches for 'packed' and then 'suitcase'. I considering drawing a person with a suitcase, ready to go somewhere. But when I pulled out the drawing paper, something else popped, and I went with it. No matter where we go or how far, we always prepare mentally. So I thought of useful 'portable' characteristics.

"Well Prepared"
11:04pm

I showed Julia my packed illo, and she said it would make a good poster. But of course, it had to go through some changes:

Because no matter where you go,
there you are -
Be well prepared,
Take where ever you go...

It is available in a print, 11x14 is the recommended size.
