"Movie and a Meal"
4:13pm

We arrived at the Harkins Theatre to find some concert preparations going on in the open mall area. Many flowers were arranged around a make shift stage, and chairs had been set up for 'reserved' seating. I was curious as to what the Hawaiian singing would be about, but not so curious as to pre-empt our movie plans. I figured I could catch any photos after the movie.

So we bought tickets and tucked into the dark theatre. Golden Compass had been alluring me since this past summer. It didn't fare too well with the critics. Perhaps they didn't appreciate the underlying themes. Others didn't think the movie was true to the source book. I haven't read Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights, so I can't know about that, but I do know I enjoyed the movie greatly. So did Julia.

Afterwards we emerged into the bright mall arena, and I hastily got my camera out. Quickly, for those colorful flowers were being taken away and loaded onto a van:

Sketch from photo that missed part of his head!

But I did capture some beautiful blooms:

I took a few more photos from which I hope to sketch later, then we finally decided on our eating place. The veggie pizza at Round Table Pizza is really quite good, and not at all greasy. We got there to find a celebration going on. A victorious high school team was being photographed holding their trophies. I was too late to capture that scene, but I did get others. Each of the young men didn't want to let loose of those trophies:

I don't know what sort of team, can't tell by the trophy, mayber soccer?

As we waited for our pizza, I took a few more photos, some of people enjoying their pizza:

"Cool Cat"
8:46am

Brian Setzer, of the Stray Cats, with his pompadour

This morning began as the usual Sunday morning, watching the pleasantly chewy bits of the CBS Sunday Morning show. As soon as I saw this dude's hair, I ran for some paper and a pen. I grabbed the first pen I saw, a standard 'Bic' ink pen. At first I didn't know who he is. But as the interview progressed, I remembered the song they gave a snippet of, "Stray Cat Strut", "I got cat class and I got cat style..." Oh yeah! I also was impressed with his general character. He explained how he has "to go and do what is unpopular". He quotes Mozart, whose songs he rendered in his own style in the album, "Wolfgang's Big Night Out", "I pay no attention to anyone's praise or blame, I simply pay attention to my own feelings." It's worked well for him. In addition to having a helluva good time, he's garnered three grammies.

"Playlist"
7:39pm

Julia, from a photo taken at the pizza parlour last Saturday

It took me four tries before I garnered something even worth showing you all. Perhaps it was my choice of using the good bristol board that inspired slightly better techniques.

I didn't do much drawing yesterday. I had thought we might see another movie, but Julia had a relapse, and spent most of the day shivering under thick layers of clothing and blankets. She's some better today, even though the darn bug has gone into her lungs.

Yesterday, I spent a great deal of time rummaging around in Amazon's mp3 files. It is like a candy store for me, so easy to purchase. I discovered the limit of what can be writ to disc, about 19-20 average length music pieces, a little more than standard CD music files, but not a whole lot. So I have a few pieces bought that didn't fit the first disk. (I took my original 'free' choices, and added to them, creating a nice blend of folksy, ethereal, and international tunes.)

playlist... (Number 1 was a partial sampler, so I scraped it to fit in another Feist piece...)

I'll put the quirkier pieces on the second CD (yes "Stray Cat Strut" is among them), and go seek some more quirk to fit with them.

But not tonight... Tonight I'm enjoying the musical results of my collecting, and sipping a Moscato Allegro, a California wine by Martin Weyrich, 2005, delicious stuff. Maybe I'll try some more sketching...

10:26pm

Maybe I'll get some good inspiration soon...

"Shoppers"
4:58am

'Shoppers', holiday deco at the mall...

"Buy, buy, buy", 'tis the season, and maybe I will be just a little bit glad to say "Bye, bye, bye" to the season. It's just kinda sad, so many materialistic expectations put on people, so many people go into mega debt this time of year who can't really afford to.

"Angry"
6:32am

(Yes, sketching from
a Flicker face), I hope this young man won't be angry!

As I get older, I find myself less anxious than I used to be. This is a welcome change. But on the flip side, I find myself more easily angered than I used to be. It comes as an overwhelming tide at times, wiser Self struggles to not be swallowed up within it. I don't always succeed. Sometimes anger convinces me an action is wiser than it is. That action seems irresistable. How long would I need to wait before true reason and calm return? An hour? A day? Next time, will I remember to wait before acting?

"Father and Child"
10:06pm

Father and child at the mall...

I did this from a greatly magnified photo I took when we were out at the mall Saturday. The father's head turned out too small, the baby's too large, and they look rather cartoonish. Maybe I will give it a second try?

Anyway, it's a really nice scene of a father taking true joy in his child, his smile giving evidence of his love. Maybe _SOME_ of that comes through in the drawing!

"Dis-illusioned"
6:01am

"A steaming pile of...."

"Was that what it was all along?"

(In case you do not know of the significance of Rose colored glasses, it is it is the optimism of the hopeful romantic, who views the objective world as he would LIKE to see it, "only seeing the good and neglecting to notice the bad.")
