"Happy Valentine's Day"
8:08am

The hopeful ogre asks "Be Mine?"

When I first began this picture, the ogre was a hobbit. But when I got to the head, the ogre came out!

"A Valentine's Hero"
4:52am

Wikipedia gives the ambigious history of Valentine's Day, going back to the Roman Lupercalia, Chaucer, and more recently, its certain reinvention in he reinvention in the 1840s.

Julia and I watched _MILK_ yesterday, at its eleven o'clock showing. It seemed the perfect thing to do, on a day in which most everyone is celebrating "LOVE", to watch a movie about a pioneer who fought for equal rights of all those who love. Sean Penn's acting is tremendous. He simply must get an Oscar for it, as the very soul of Harvey Milk seems to have entered him. It is one thing to act as a fictional character. Brad Pitt did well with the reverse aging _Benjamin Button_. But he had free rein, bounded only by the creators' vision of the story. Many people alive today still remember the real Harvey Milk, and for those of us who either are too young, or weren't there, plenty of photos and sound recordings give evidence to what he was like.

His voice is recording urging "every gay doctor come out, every gay lawyer, every gay architect come out, stand up and let that world know. That would do more to end prejudice overnight than anybody would imagine. I urge them to do that, urge them to come out. Only that way will we start to achieve our rights."Wikiquote.

Back in the seventies, it was a very different time. It was frightening then to do so, as the reactions could be unpredictable. But Milk, and others like him, gave us the courage to simply live our lives as anyone else does, openly and without fear.

"Valentine's Anti-Heroes"
8:01am

Most of the world celebrates Valentine's Day. But there are those who are fervently against it. Some Islamic fundamentalists are against it. "A Jordanian dressed a donkey in red and placed it at the entrance of the city of Ramtha, 80 kilometres north of Amman, on Saturday to express his rejection of celebrations marking Valentine's Day, the daily al-Dustour reported Sunday."The donkey had "red roses fixed to its ears." In India, Hindu fundamentalists are against it. Shiv Sena "organised a protest in the city and burnt greeting cards. SS activists had earlier claimed that they would blacken the faces of lovers who crossed the limit which, of course, they would determine." Fundamentalists! We could all live in peace if it weren't for 'fundamentalists'!

"The Google Meme"
6:21am

I began the morning with good intentions to do some of my own alterations and shorten some blouse sleeves. The blouse sits on my lap, in process, but it wasn't long before I got distracted. I spied this meme in 'queenie-of-dark's' journal:

The Google Meme

1. All your Pope Joan needs.
(Really, I don't want to be 'Pope', but I once received the appellation Joan of Dark, which I rather like!)
2. Joan looks lovely.
(Maybe not this morning, all with 'bed hair', seated here crosslegged in a red plaid flannel nightgown which also needs its sleeves shortened.)
3. Joan says... l'amour est dans l'air.
(Yes, and it's making me sneeze!)
4. Joan wants to go, too!
(Yes, I want to go, Yes! New York City! Yes, Cue music...
"Take me to New York, I’d love to see LA.
I really want to come kick it with you..."
Estelle has never been to Brooklyn. I have, and can tell you "The museum's GOOD!" I did see a bit of LA, too.
Alas I only have ten vacation days and only so much money, but yes, Joan wants to go, too...

5. "Joan Does Dynasty," a classic in feminist media deconstruction, is a hilarious look at the materialistic 80's in the context of the ordinary working ...
(Never heard of it, gather it's a book. Yes, I did see the TV show 'Dynasty' once or twice. It's the one with 'JR' who shot somebody. I know more about Egyptian dynasties...)
6. Joan hates meetings
(Well, now, that depends on what kind of meeting it is...)
7. Joan asks how many she can have now
(Yes, that sounds like greedy me, who wants as many as she can get...)
8. Joan Likes Having Sales.
(Oh, yes I do. I caught one at landsend.com yesterday, and another denim skirt and flannel blouse are on their way. Yes, I'll have to shorten the sleeves on that one, too...)
9. Joan eats crow.
(I am vegetarian, but there's a certain sort of crow I've eaten. I don't like it much...)
10. Joan wears her ring
(This link referred to 'Joan Collins' and her wedding ring, but better me, I think. I wear my ring, I wear seven of them, in fact!)
11. Joan was arrested for drunk driving in Quincy, Massachusetts.
(This was referring to 'Joan Kennedy'. A simple wine tasting gets me 'buzzed'. I've only been crazy drunk once, and 'never again'.)
12. Joan Loves Chachi
(I vaguely recall that show, a spin-off of "Happy Days", I think. I like better the next result that has a real sentence: "Joan loves paper and we love Joanīs work." I love paper, love to take pen to it and colored pencil and... "You love my work, don't you?" :)

This was a fun meme!

"Homework Done"
4:52pm

It is now about five minutes before I would ordinarily arrive home from work. It being 'President's Day', I had the day off. I tackled some of my own alterations projects, the scraps of which you see above. I shortened the brown stripe and red plaid blouse sleeves 2 1/4 in (6 cm). The red flannel was three inches off the sleeves of two flannel nightgowns. And the pink check was 3 1/2 (9 cm) off the hem of two flannel nightgowns.

After all that work, I had a nice soaky bath, and now I'm ready to relax and enjoy the evening.

"Improved Photo Gallery"
8:44pm

I took a look at my photo gallery, and decided to give it an overhaul. In the process, I decided six photos no longer made the grade, and removed them. (I also brought the gallery to a folder here at joanlansberry.com. Eventually I hope to get the tangled mess I left at its old domain cleaned up.) But at least I've got a good start in that direction.

Note of Wednesday, February 18, 2009:
(Note of Saturday, February 20, 2010 (More URL changes!):
I am now doing the same for the 'Essential Joan' pages! I began with the most recent going backwards in time, got to Imagining the Future, and then went to the oldest pieces going forward in time, and got to The Balance We Need. I'll return to the group in the middle as soon as possible.

Note of Thursday morning, February 19, 2009:
From Magical Memory Gate onwards to the last piece is done. So the 'middle section' of unfinished pieces is getting smaller. Perhaps tonight I shall finish them?
Note of Thursday evening, February 19, 2009:
No, I did not finish, I have about ten yet to sift through. From "Response to a Christian forward is done, however.

"Quick Sketch and..."
9:17pm

Fifteen minute sketch from
'Sergei Migitsko'

I have at last finished the 'Essential Joan' pages. They surely needed looking over as I had some stuff there that just didn't belong. There were rants which had nothing to do with me, some generally bad artwork, and one page was far too personal. It's not my nature to reveal THAT much, but I might have been encouraged by Laura to post it. Also, some pieces necessary to understanding me weren't there. I did not have the 'night blooming flowers' poem, which is so necessary to understand my transition to 'darkside'. Furthermore, I didn't have my experience with the pigs, which is necessary to understand my transition to vegetarianism (erm 'pescetarianism'). I also improved the linkage to include 'back and forth' links.

After catching up with the 'world of web', I had to have at least a quick sketch. Tomorrow, I'll return to a portrait I've left sitting for a while.
