"Puzzling Dream"
6:36am

I transitioned from sleep, to bed like a car (or was it car like a bed?). An accident happened a couple of cars a head of me. It involved a young thin blond woman. Later, I shortened her damaged dress. I meet a short, sturdy, gray haired nurse, who will not reveal what happens to her. Did she live or die? I did not know.

Then we were in sort a of dorm room with yellow walls. I wasn't liking the conditions, (Cold?) But I heard about people who live in worse conditions, no heat or air conditioning. After this is when I was shortening the dress, white with tiny black polka dots, with delicate lace trim at edges. I never did learn the fate of the woman.

"Circling the Web and Gesturing"
6:20am

For the past few days I've been busy following the link trail of the Egyptian art pool at Flicker. While waiting for pictures to load, I've been polishing the pendant. Oh, my surprise, when I learned _I_ would have to do the bulk of the polishing, with sandpaper in 400, 600 and finally 1200 grits. It's awfully slow going. So whenever I'm watching TV or waiting for the web I make double use of the time, moving the pendant in circular motions on the sandpaper.

I've been vicariously enjoying the travel of others. They've taken some good photos, so their eyes must do for mine, still here in Yuma.

I've noted with curiousity about the gestures the pharoah makes in two different reliefs:

The temple complex at Luxor, Egypt

The temple of pharaoh Ramses III at Medinet Habu

One commenter opined "The king making the ritual offering of the goddess ma'at; the symbol of cosmic order and righteousness." Hmm, I wasn't sure, so I asked my knowledgeable colleagues, who knew right where to point me.

The gesture is significant in the "Opening of the Mouth" ceremony. Ann Macy Roth explains "Here its central act, the opening of the mouth itself, is shown to mimic the clearing of a newborn's mouth with the little fingers.", in "Fingers, Stars, and the 'Opening of the Mouth': the Nature and Function of the Ntrwj-blades". The 'Opening of the Mouth' is done for the deceased, that he might be able to speak and take in nutrition in the afterlife. "Why should a newly reborn king need to have his mouth opened? At birth, a baby's mouth is obstructed by mucus that must be cleared before the baby can breath. In modern births, the mouth is cleared using a bulb syringe, but the physician's little finger is also put into the mouth to test for any abnormalities of the palate. The small size, softness and sensitivity which make the little finger appropriate for this task would make it equally suitable for cleaning the mouth." (Ibid)

This symbolic 'mouth clearing' gesture is also done to statues, giving them 'life'. Ramses III is thereby giving the statue of Horus 'life' by his gesture. Also, mouth clearing can also be combined with 'annointing' rituals, "A similar gesture, in which one little finger is offered while the other hand holds the jar, continues to be the typical gesture for anointing throughout Egyptian history."(Ibid) In both the Luxor and the Medinet Habu scenes, the pharoah is also holding a jar.

"Wealth of the Moment"
7:02pm

The Photo Friday theme this week is "Wealth". I am not one who dreams of great wealth. I would not trade my life with that of the very rich. A few days ago, the radio DJ asked the audience "If you could be anyone you wanted to, who would you be?" The responses were the predictable desires to trade life spaces with movie stars and sports stars. I found it rather sad that no one wanted to be who they were. Although I didn't call in, I shared my answer with my co-worker, "I have no desire to be anyone else but me. However, if I could be me with a paid off condo, without fifty excess pounds of weight, and without this bug that hangs on forever, I would be happy!"

No fancy estate, no Madonna look alike body, nothing like that. I like my headspace and count that contentment wealth.

That said, I do enjoy my material possessions and took the camera to my new shoes:

A reviewer said of these shoes:
"I bought these before going to Italy and they were comfortable immediately. Didn't have to break them in. They were good on cobblestone pavement, for hiking and in museums."

That was all I needed to know. I didn't want a repeat of last years 'agony of da-feet' at a certain vast museum. This year I shall be ready. As I wore them for the first time today, I could feel those fancy soles almost propelling me forward as I walked. Cobblestone, I'll be ready for you! European painting galleries, European sculpture and decorative arts, American painting and sculpture, I'll be ready for you!

Travel, and the shoes to take on the streets in the places to which I travel, these are among the things I count as 'wealth'.

I have one more photo to share. The sun broke through the clouds for a brief while at sunset, just long enough to illuminate these roses:

This transitory beauty, the 'wealth' of the moment...

I decided this almost looked like a painting, which could illustrate so well the Friday Illo theme of 'Fleeting', and with a few 'digital daubs', it does, so I used it. (I put it into photo gallery, as well)

"Stretch!"
6:39am

I woke early with thoughts and decided to let inner muse speak:

Stretch!

What holds you to the wall of your limitation?
What fear sinks you back?
What nebulous gray shadow has you pinned?
Can you at least free your eyes to look?
Does your heart pound in your frail frame?
You, your spirit beating wings against the cage?
Your spirit wants to fly.
It would not shrink back.
It has eyes which see far,
it can travel where flesh cannot.
Your spirit can imagine the terrain,
(Flesh may follow),
But spirit travels there first.
Spirit sends spiraling strength to the spine,
which then informs muscle.
Muscle twitches into action,
breaking away from rigid immobilizing fears.
The cage does not hold you!
Imagination forms the key,
imagination born of spirit's fire
forges iron resolve.
The cage cannot hold you,
the fears will not pin you,
when you are strengthened with this firm resolve.
Lift off into the unwritten span of your future,
Only you can write this story.
Only you can fight this strong.
Spirit wins with each stretch.

Stretch!

Spirit speaks well to me this morning, and I hope my flesh listens.

I have a printable version, too.

"Coming Along"
708am

My Ma'at mandala is coming along...

Oh, I've been quite busy with researching Weret Hekau, the serpent goddesses of ancient Egypt and creating this mandala. I have still the corner elements to design and place, possibly falcon wings holding Was scepters. I wasn't content with the Ankh with Ma'at feather drawing, and I thought better to illustrate 'balance'(one of the aspects of Ma'at) with a mandala. How fortunate that the hieroglyph for 'eternity of cyclical futurity' is also symmetrical, to nicely fit into the design!
