"I'm Back!"
5:48pm

I've returned safely from a wonderful trip. I'm weary, still operating on New York time, but I just want to share one photo, before I head off to an early bed:

This is the view coming back around to Fifth street, after viewing 'Cleopatra's Needle'...

"Shiny Things at the Met"
3:33am

(Yes, still operating on NY time! :) I'm a little late for the Photo Friday Challenge of 'Shiny', but I took these photos on Friday:

Shiny Things - Storage Area in Renovated American Wing at Metropolitan Museum, NYC

More Shiny Things - Storage Area

The new American Wing is absolutely gorgeous. So many lovely pieces are displayed so attractively. Here is another 'shiny thing' from this area:

Bryant Vase
Tiffany & Co. (1837 - present)
Designed by James H. Whitehouse (1833-1902)
Chased by Eugene J. Soligny (1832-1901)
Five medallions attributed to Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1948-1907)
New York City, 1876
Silver, 33 1/2 x 14 x 11 5/16 in. (85.1 x 35.6 x 28.7 cm); Diam. 11 5/16 in. (28.7cm); 452 oz. 16 dwt. (14084.2 g)

Detail of medallion with Bryant's portrait...

(From info card and museum website)
"To honor the poet and newspaper editor William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) on his eightieth birthday, a group of his friends commissioned "a commemorative Vase of original design and choice workmanship' that would 'embody...the lessons of [his] literary and civic career.' Its design, which combines Renaissance Revival sensibilities with those of the Aesthetic movement, consists of a Greek vase form ornamented with symbolic imagery and motifs. The fretwork of American flora covering the body of the vase, including apple branches and blossoms, represents the beauty and wholesome quality of Bryant's poetry, while the scenes in the oval medallions allude to his life and works."
"Truth crushed to earth shall rise again" (a famous line from his poetry) is inlaid in gold around the neck of the vase."

"Reflections in a Mirror"
6:48pm

I saw the following mirror in one of the period rooms in the American Wing. I didn't capture its info, so I can't tell any more about it. But I love the way the rest of the room shows in the mirror:

"Amulet Illustration"
6:46am

I was looking through my trip photos last night, and one of the amulets at the Met museum caught my eye. It is showing a connection between the Udjat eye and the cobra Wadjet:

From area of things from Dynasty 26 - 28...

I thought it would make a good illustration for this in that paper I've been working on (Two versions, one concentrating more on ancient lore and one showing context and current applications). But the image had been captured in relative darkness, and despite my best Photoshop efforts, it was still not as clear as I'd like it to be. And besides I needed a good excuse to draw something, ANY something!

I adjusted it in Photoshop to get proportions right...

"Trip Journal All Online!"
2:11pm

We're enjoying unseasonably cool weather. At 2:11pm, we still do not need the AC. Early this morning, Julia and I went for a walk at Gateway park. Surprisingly few people were out there taking advantage of the coolness, but we did see a few bicyclists, two with adult tricycles.

I've enjoyed the fresh air coming in through the door and windows as I've worked on getting the last of my trip journal online. Happily I report I've at last finished it. To start at the beginning, begin with May 21, 2009

"Intuitive Line Drawing"
2:23pm

I finally made a sketch for an artwork. (It feels ages since I've done one.) But I could tell my subconscious was 'full' last night, so I did an intuitive drawing. The first result was a bit of a mess. So I redrew it using the glass table with the light underneath. I took that result, scanned it and smoothed the lines some more in Photoshop.

I'm not sure I want to start with digital coloring. So I made a printable version to experiment with. To get it back to the original pixel size, I could scan it 300 dpi instead of 200 dpi and size it to original pixels. Then I can play some more...

Now I'm REALLY seeing green in the 'arm' base, sky blue elsewhere and a bright pink for the 'tree trunk' ;)
