"Art for the Home"
6:28am

The morning air at last is cool, we return from a small park walk in hopes the worst of summer heat is behind us. I turn my thoughts towards art and its creation. Those artists most remembered and loved, what do they do to achieve such? Many worthy paintings hang on museum walls that people wouldn't want (even in smaller size for small apartments) on their walls. What kind of thing is pleasant for that wall?

The Romans in Pompeii had frescos of garden scenes on their villa walls. They were bringing the outdoors in, a theme continued with landscape painting through out the centuries. But I am bored of just landscapes. Still lifes are a popular theme, (of which I created a few in my college days), but I don't find much inspiration there. Portraits are only pleasing if the wall-owner knows the person (or wishes they knew the person). A Unitarian friend had/has a photo of Walt Whitman on their wall. The wealthy Romans had busts of Greek philosophers.

What should 'art for the home' accomplish? Obviously, tastes vary, and that ancient Greek wine cup with a man bent over the backside of his naked lady friend won't do for everyone! Our home is filled with images and statues of Greek and Egyptian deities. We like having images of these God-forms around us to put our minds in the right frame of mind for experiences of the divine. But they all represent a symbolic metaphysical system of which one needs to have understanding to appreciate.

And even should this knowledge exist, one simply may not think an artist has fully exemplified a particular deity's traits.

What could 'art for the home' look like? What could it accomplish? It could create a mood. It could capture a moment of ideal perfection. It could have a subtle revitalization for the mind. It could soothe. It could amuse. It ought to serve as gateway for the sort of energies we wish to attract to our home.

This is something I want to pose to my intuitive mind as a potential guiding theme. I'll still want to capture the 'mood of the moment' and do all the other sorts of things that intrigue me. But I want to add this type also. I look forward to what I might create using these directives.

"Remembering the Gardens"
6:46am

It's Monday, I must return to the mundane work world, but I will remember those lovely gardens at the Villa:

Seeing the garden through the pillars...

Closer view of those statues...

The garden seen above is an herb garden, this one is much larger...

Seeing the pillars from this garden...

We were sitting on a matching bench across the way...

Closer view of one of those statues (which are reproductions of those at the Villa de Papiri in Italy)...

Another one of these statues...
