(I wonder if those boxes were holding items meant for the travelling show "To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum"? It is travelling from summer 2008 to fall 2011 to "more than ten venues", and features "107 objects" from its collection, and I read one of them includes the Phoenix Art Museum. (I will be able to see what I didn't see in New York!):)
