Jonathan Kozol

As captured September 6, 2009
C-Span Book TV is featuring a three hour long interview with Jonathan Kozol this morning. The camera eye has been mostly focused on Kozol as he discusses his life and books. What an opportunity to practice sketching! This author began as a teacher. The picture caption 'Poetry in Schools' derives from an event in his life. He was reading poetry to his fourth grade students. One of the black students was so happy to hear poetry by black poets and asked to borrow the book from which Kozol read. She took it home and memorized Langston Hughes "A Raisin in the Sun". So these young minds were coming alive. But, alas, poetry reading was not on the assigned topics. So the school officials tried to fire him!
He soon got a teaching job elsewhere, but meanwhile the injustice of this inspired him to get involved with the civil rights movement.
