Rameses II with this gesture is affirming that he will uphold Ma'at, that he will seek the beautiful, true, and the just, that his consciousness shall be embued with the ever present awareness of Ma'at, for the ancient Egyptians knew that all life depends upon this. My drawing is done from a wall plaque image (reversed so he's facing outwards) from a temple wall painting at Abydos, Dyn. XIX, 1300 B.C. I added a few original details, but overall, it is as the original. The XXX stands for the Xepera Xeper Xeperu formula. (The black and white version is in my 'Tastings' journal.) |
