WHO is this dude with the funny ears?
The Ancient Egyptians called him "Great in Strength". Set is "He Before Whom the Sky Shakes", in his role of God of Thunder and Lightning. He's 'loud' and he's proud. Pride of being is his essence. Set was also given the title "the great one of two-fold strength". Thus, he immanates Power, electrical, chaotic, and fierce, but that which enables Worlds to be brought into being. 'Enemy of Boundaries', he pushes the limits. Although sometimes feared as the God of Chaos, the ancients understood that Set has a necessary role in the cosmos. Although a shapeshifter, he's most often recognised by his tall, squared off ears and snout. I like to think those ears imply he's 'keen of hearing',
in his state of being supremely aware.

'Unconventional' is certainly one of Set's aspects. However, there is a distinct tradition in conveying him in the Ancient images. Always, he has the snout and the squared off ears. The tail will be forked. Yet, even the Egyptians varied in their depictions. TeVelde speaks of how "there was a close relation between the Seth-animal and the griffin."(Seth, God of Confusion, pg 5 ) Also, "representations of griffins have been found at Beth Shean with the head of a Seth-animal, wings, and instead of a tail the feather of Maat."(ibid, page 17). Here's an image TeVelde shares on page 19:
